Helping with Poverty By: Sherlize Jaro

I have recently visited my mom’s province, Calumpit, Bulacan last weekend. As a privileged young student I was bothered by the stories I heard about how my cousin’s go through hardship everyday just to make ends meet and still not have enough income, is a really heartbreaking story. Many families like theirs are suffering because of poverty. We cannot deny the fact that our country is suffering with this kind of issue. Another reason why families such as theirs are experiencing such hardship is because of the rising price of the essentials in life such as food, shelter, clothes etc. The stories also disturbed me because as a citizen of this country I know that it has been suffering from poverty but I did not think that so many Filipinos are going through so much pain just to support their families. These problems can be solved in a proper manner with the help of everyone.

In my own small way, the resolution I would suggest to the government is (1) To open their eyes with the truth of what’s really happening inside our country. (2) Make a free educational program, especially in places where poverty is mostly seen, so they will find a better alternative with making a living to support their families and so they don’t only rely with what they can do around them but improve and hone their skills to be able to become an employee with a job that pays well. (3) Support agricultural sectors and simply facilitate the import and export in markets to lessen their prices. (4) Lead us in accordance to survive and rise from this situation. If all these things can be accomplished then that would be of great help to not only the families who go through such hardships but for our whole country.

With small steps, comes great steps, and with these great steps each and every one of us can help others who are less fortunate than ourselves, understand the greater good in life. This is my goal and with everyone’s help we can make poverty history. Let us give others the life they deserve and stop this harmful issue we call Poverty. Life is not fair. “Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.” A quote that simply portrays what the stories told to me is all about.
